Fantail Fridays at Nauticus

NORFOLK --- Nauticus is set to partner up with Dolphin Scholarship Foundation on August 5, at 8:30 p.m. Together they will host 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, which is the second movie of this season’s popular Fantail Friday Film Festival aboard the Battleship Wisconsin.

The Dolphin Scholarship Foundation is a program that will help provide assistance for undergraduate college students who have parents that served in the United States Navy, that are active or retired.

The festival doors open at 7:30 p.m. and tickets can be purchased at the Nauticus Admissions desk prior to the start of the film. Please bring camp/beach chairs and blankets.

Buckroe Beach Festival 2011

HAMPTON -  Paragon Publishing and Mothers Against Crime will be hosting the 1st annual Buckroe Beach Festival Saturday, July 16, 2011 from 8:00 AM - 8:00 PM.  The activities will begin at 10:00 AM. Festival admission is free.

The mission of the Buckroe Beach Fest is to promote, protect, and enhance Buckroe Beach’s position as a destination area that should be supported.  The Buckroe Beach Festival will show young adults that gang violence and participation is not the way to live your life.

There will be an assortment of music and live bands: Gospel, Hip Hop, Rock, Pop, and R&B.  The festival will include a kids show, vendors, a fashion show, and even Zumba.  Other activities will include a hair show, bike and car show, and a Beauty of the Beach contest.

NEWPORT NEWS – EXET will be holding a community service project at the Fort Eustis Community Center on September 9, 2011.  Sit Down to Stand Up will give HRT patrons a place to sit and rest while waiting for their bus to arrive.     

The group has met their goal and raised $2,279.  EXET plans to build 18 different benches throughout the North district of Newport News.  Areas include Denbigh and Fort Eustis to Jefferson and Warwick.

EXET is an anti-bullying and motivational workshop resource for schools, social organizations, and child care facilities.  The program addresses a number of issues from bullying to self-motivation to anger management.

The youth will participate in the community service opportunity.  There are 100 teens that will help build the benches.  Sit Down to Stand Up will show the youth the power in creating positive changes instead of making negative choices.

The 29th Annual Norfolk Jazz Festival returns to Town Point Park July 22nd and 23rd. The region’s longest running outdoor Jazz Festival promises to provide the legendary sounds of smooth jazz for listeners. The festival features an impressive line up of both local and national jazz favorites. On Friday night, performers include Marion Meadown, Warren Hill and Paul Taylor appearing as “Gentlemen of the Night”. Steve Cole will kick off Saturday night followed by Peter White, Kirk Whalum and Rick Braun appearing as “Jazz Attack”. The festival is a ticketed event. 2011 Peninsula Commercial Vehicle Driver Appreciation Day

Start the summer season off with safety first.  Last week, Drive Safe Hampton Roads (DSHR) Peninsula and Specialized Transportation Safety Committees partnered with local law enforcement motor carrier units to conduct the First Annual Peninsula Commercial Motor Vehicle Driver Appreciation Day.

The event was held on Interstate 664 near the Monitor Merrimac Tunnel at the northbound inspection station.
