10th Annual Beautillion Miltaire Scholarship & Awards banquet

The Chesapeake/Virginia Beach Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi, Inc is having their 10Th Annual Beautillion Militaire Scholarship & Awards banquet on Saturday, June 4, 2011 at 4 p.m. The event will take place at the downtown Norfolk Marriott (235 East Main Street). Eight High School Senior males will be awarded for their academic and community achievements. They will also dance the waltz and be celebrated during this elegant gala.

The scholarship/enrichment program has played an integral role throughout the Hampton roads community for the past 10 years. This is a six month program. Collectively we assist these young men with fund raising for college. We also offer monthly workshops demonstrating leadership skills, etiquette, and financial planning to name to few. In addition to scholarships, this year we will be providing laptops to each participant courtesy of American Small Business Alliance, Inc.

Railroad Crossing Replacement Project Continues

Norfolk, Va.—Beginning Saturday, June 4, Thole Street will be completely closed in both directions at the Norfolk Southern railroad crossing near Tidewater Drive as part of a citywide project to replace 12 railroad crossings through July. This closure is expected to be completed by Monday, June 6, weather conditions permitting.

 

Variable message boards have been placed near the construction site and on Granby Street and Tidewater Drive to alert motorists to the pending closure.  A map of the detour route and directions are available at http://tinyurl.com/3s3ypqw

Detour routes:

  • Eastbound—From Thole Street eastbound, turn left onto Tidewater Drive, veer to the right to reach the Tidewater Drive/Little Creek Road signal.

29th Chesapeake Jubliee

29th Chesapeake Jubliee

The 29th Chesapeake Jubilee begins Thursday, May 19 and runs through Sunday, May 22 at City Park.  Musical guests include Grammy winning country artist Gretchen Wilson, platinum recording artists 10,000 Maniacs, and the reggae legends the Wailers.  

The Jubilee will again host the Annual Chesapeake Kiwanis Club Shrimp Feast and the Annual BBQ Cook-off Competition, sanctioned by the world famous Kansas City Barbeque Society.

In addition to great Music and Food, Amusements of America, one of the nation’s premier carnival operators will be on site with thrilling rides and game. Bring the kids out for what is sure to be a memorable occasion.

Tide Gate testing scheduled for the Midtown Tunnel

NORFOLK— The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will close the Route 58 Midtown Tunnel on Sunday, May 22, from 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. to test the tide gate system. Motorists should plan on using the I-264 Downtown Tunnel as an alternate route during this time.

Gilmerton Bridge overnight Saturday closure postponed

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has postponed the planned Gilmerton closure scheduled for Saturday evening, May 14, until later this May.

Additional critical construction activities must be performed before the planned drilled shaft installation can occur. Information will be provided regarding the updated closure date as soon as possible to lessen motorist impacts.

The upcoming closure will be rescheduled during off peak hours so that peak travel times will not be impacted.

This work is part of the Gilmerton Bridge Replacement project on schedule to be completed by October, 2013.  Motorists are encouraged to visit www.va511.org, call 511, listen to Highway Advisory Radio (HAR) 610 AM or call the Traffic Information Line at 757-361-3016 for current traffic and travel information.

Richard Simmons to speak at Successful Aging forum

National fitness expert Richard Simmons is the keynote speaker at this year’s forum entitled “You Are Worth Fighting For.” Simmons has helped millions of overweight men and women lose close to 3,000,000 pounds by adopting sensible balanced eating programs and exercise routines that are energetic, fun and motivating.

The Successful Aging Forum will provide senior adults with information to help them live a more active and healthier lifestyle. A panel of Hampton Roads’ leading medical experts will be on hand, including: John W. Aldridge, MD, Orthopaedic Surgeon; William N. Hovland, MD, Geriatrician; Anand Kapur, MD, Family Practice and Sports Medicine; and Nauman Naseer, MD, Cardiologist.  Humana Marketpoint Health Care is the presenting sponsor.  

The event will be on Friday, May 13,2011 at Hampton Roads Convention Center located at 1610 Coliseum Drive, in Hampton,VA.

Ocean View Park Free Concerts

 

 

Norfolk, VA (May 12, 2011) – Norfolk Festevents announced today the official 2011 Ocean View Beach Park schedule of events. Between July 1 and August 26, 2011, guests will be able to enjoy live performances from local and regional bands every Friday night at our TGOV Beach Music Concert Series (Thank Goodness It’s Ocean View!). On Sunday nights from May 29 through Sept. 4, put on your dancing shoes as Big Bands on the Bay gets your feet moving.

 

The TGOV Beach Music Concert Series is a great way to start the weekend with Live Music on the Chesapeake Bay, children’s activities, cornhole games, food, beverages and more!
